Locals admire efforts and popularize them into folklore. Entertaining as always, the story of the Sacco family battling the Mafia is well-told and illustrates well how justice can be undermined by criminality, venality, and apathy towards public interest by the state.

Luigi Sacco had started life as a field peasant, but through hard work and a knowledge of pistachio trees, had built up a prosperous business and by the mids, he also had camilleri large, equally hard-working, family. I personally don’t know much about the mafia, beyond what I know from popular culture so I found this book to be an interesting, shocking and very quick read.
I’ve read and enjoyed two of Camilleri’s Inspector Montalbano mysteries, but this book was just astoundingly bad. Want to Read saving…. His most famous works, the Montalbano series show many pirandellian elements: From to Camilleri studied stage and film direction at the Silvio D’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts, and began to take on work as a director and screenwriter, directing especially plays by Pirandello and Beckett.
Eventually the mafia changed tactics and began to use the state apparatus to their benefit, by threatening or bribing people to charge the Saccos with serious crimes. I just found it depressing and frustrating how good was continuously squashed by evil people — there was little of the redemption camilleri even humous that can be found in Camilleri’s delightful mysteries. It’s told very matter of factly, as opposed to vividly rendered in a narrative.
In the end camilleti core of the Sacco family were on the run for years from both the mafia and from the state. Published October 17th by Sellerio first published Trivia About La banda Sacco. Intelligent and well educated, he already knows several foreign languages. Either a true crime story, or historical fiction based on a true story — I honestly don’t know which — it’s pretty much devoid of any of the humor or style of the Montalbano novels, and by the end I was totally confused about whether author Camilleri concluded that the Sacco brothers did or didn’t commit the crimes for which they were convicted, or whether his final answer was “who knows?
