Despite her growing fame, Butler has remained in her adult life the loner she was as a child. She focuses on the need to write even though you do not feel like writing; persistence is the most important part to become a great writer. Not shying away from difficult and heavy ideas, this collection contains stories that explore conflicts of love and trust in an exploitative symbiotic relationship between humans and an alien race that rely upon humans to be able to procreate, mankind trying to deal with the consequences of a cure for cancer that inadvertently creates a new and horrifying genetical disease and a future where it is necessary to come to terms with sharing the earth with a very different alien life form that has committed atrocities against the human race in the past.

I’ve never been a fan of science fiction, but I guess I am now! This is my first work by Butler. It was also a time of backlash against feminism by men and women alike. Some complex moral questions are creatively posited by this situation—for instance, is it acceptable for one species to require another to help it survive and is such a relationship necessarily exploitative, or might it be possible for interdependence between two completely different bpoodchild of beings to be mutually beneficial?

May 30, Parvoneh rated it liked it. The image of the female penetrating the male and impregnating him clearly complicates the traditional gendering of sexual imagery.

The author’s afterword is very insightful and widened my understanding of the theme of this story. Apparently, Butler was scared of weirdos.
